Tim Houchin is an experienced bench joiner in the team. He began with APSS in our in-house workshop in 2015 as a Joinery Apprentice.

The perfect fit for the perfect look
One of the biggest benefits for office businesses in using our service is that it enables them to truly maximise their workspace, filling in any awkward gaps in their office space.
Tim explained: “Often, an office has some unusual-sized spaces which don’t provide the perfect angles for an ‘off-the-shelf’ storage product. So, this is where our bespoke joinery excels - we can design, build and install bespoke storage solutions for alcoves, curved walls and any other space that you need to match with existing office furniture. We also make matching desk end storage and biophilic additions like planter storage.
“With our bespoke joinery, the product looks like it’s meant to be there in that particular space, like it grew there.”

CNC and edge bander tech
One of APSS’ biggest investments to date is our Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine. This enables the team to quickly and efficiently produce bespoke items such as curvatures, or carve out intricate shapes and letters for unique company brand signage.
Tim added: “The CNC is an excellent, high-speed machine tool that results in exquisite and unique finishes to suit our clients’ needs.”
Visitors to our joinery workshop are always impressed by our top-of-the-range edge bander machine. It applies a thin strip of material to the edge of a panel to give it a flush finish.
Our bespoke joinery solutions
The APSS Bespoke Joinery team specialises in making a wide range of customised joinery items to upgrade an office space.
Bespoke reception desks and counters
Tim said: “We work with you to best understand your requirements to design, manufacture and install a customised reception desk or counter for your business that’ll be a real asset. A good reception area makes an instant positive impression, reflects your brand’s personality and is an inviting space for your customers.
“We love designing custom reception desks. We’ve made all sorts of reception counters, including reception desks with a biophilic twist or reception desks with beautiful wood finishes, as part of a refurbished reception area or a complete fit out.
“In a healthcare centre, we produced a reception desk with protective screens and a bespoke joinery ‘pass hatch’ for samples to be passed discretely from patients to professionals.”
Our team also creates built-for-purpose desks. For example, the team designed, manufactured and installed laboratory desks for Cellomatics Biosciences Ltd, a laboratory-based Contract Research Organisation in Nottingham, as part of the APSS state-of-the-art refurbishment of Cellomatics’ new high-spec lab and office space.
Bespoke storage solutions
Tim continued: “We are experts in making bespoke storage solutions, anything the customer needs, including fitted storage, storage cupboards and storage units to reduce office clutter, credenza units, wall and desk end storage, bespoke LED lightboxes for office window displays, bespoke lockers, and warehouse and workshop storage solutions.
“We can make our products to any dimension and apply a variety of finishes.”
Toilet cubicles and vanity units
We’re experts in more than just wood. We combine different materials, such as glass, and our joinery team is fully trained in Corian as an alternative surface for sink units, as well as bench surfaces and desks. We design, build and install customised vanity units, toilet cubicles and integrated panel systems (IPS) for toilet fit outs or refurbishments.
“Corian is a tough, flexible material made from acrylic and minerals, great for places like kitchens and bathrooms. It comes in lots of colours and finishes, can be easily repaired and shaped to fit different spaces,” said Tim.
One of the first things you’ll notice in our joinery workshop is the sheer variety of bespoke joinery products that our in-house team produces.
“These are not your basic ‘off-the-shelf’ options,” said Tim.
“If you have a joinery requirement you’d like designed and installed, our team can fulfil exactly what you need.”
Let’s talk about tables
Boardroom tables, conference tables, meeting room tables and tall tables for shorter, standing meetings - APSS Bespoke Joinery can design, create and install all of these to suit your office, as independent items or as part of a larger interior fit out project. And, when it comes to meeting booth seating, ‘beach huts’, huddle pods, banquet or central seating areas, standing pods, and lecterns, APSS Bespoke Joinery can do it all.
Tim said: “An office beach hut is a small, collaborative workspace or meeting space in the style of a beach hut. They’re for two, three or four people and are really good for privacy or as a place for quiet work.”
What about walls and ceilings?
Tim said: “Yes, we make a lot of slatted walls, wooden partitions, and acoustic ceiling rafts and don’t forget we’re also experts in traditional joinery work like bespoke windows, timber door frames and doors, skirting boards and dado rails.”
