Twenty years delivering exceptional environments

As we celebrate our 20th year in business, we reflect on where the business has come from, where it stands today and what the future holds.

When Darren started out the interiors business he set himself a target to hit a £1 million turnover a year.  20 years on the company stands at £27m turnover, employs 50 permanent staff and occupies a 13,000 sq ft office, showroom and joinery workshop on Kingsley Road in Lincoln.  The company operates both locally and nationally and has recently completed design and build renovations for Horton Skoda and Greenray Energy Solutions in Lincoln, Virgin Trains in York, Wren Kitchens and other leading retailers across the country delivering complete construction and fit out projects. 

“We purposely set out to use as many local Lincolnshire businesses as possible on our new project. Greenray had worked with APSS on previous smaller projects and therefore when it came to our new building, it was an easy choice. APSS certainly didn’t let us down and they engaged us right the way through the project, from the conception and design phase, through to creating a virtual reality model and following through the build and completion of the office environment, it has been a pleasure to work with them. Darren believes that APSS’ reputation for delivering a first class job together with good working relationships with clients has secured repeat business, led to positive word of mouth and has essentially turned the business into the powerhouse it is today.

He also stands by the moto that no job is too big or too small. “Bigger businesses don’t tend to get involved in the smaller jobs because it is probably a lot of hassle for little profit and little turnover.

“Our ethos is, if we do a job for a small business they’ll grow and we’ll grow with them.

“It’s a knock-on effect. For example, if we do a little job for £5,000, we receive good feedback and when that customer comes to expand or move to a new premises they’ll contact us again.”

It’s an approach that has paid off, as numerous businesses have done just that and returned to the company when it came to expanding their premises.

Over the last 5 years the company has expanded into the construction arena, delivering multi million pound build projects for some very large clients.  Operations Director, Laurence Barrass, leads the commercial team and APSS have had some huge successes in this area, going up against well-known building contractors, securing the business and delivering a first class result. 

When asked what the future holds for APSS, Darren went on to say “We’re not standing still and we’ve got some really good goals in mind.  We are ambitious in that we believe we can reach £40-50m turnover with the team and skill set we have developed here.”

Darren insists that his team are why the business is the success it is today. “We work alongside each other rather than underneath each other. We encourage everyone to get involved in all aspects of the business.

“That’s because we’ve been lucky enough to recognise good people, give them an environment where they want to work and let them grow.”

The APSS offices are currently undergoing an expansion and facelift themselves and the team welcome people to come along to visit their showroom in April for the grand reveal.
