APSS are long-term partners of Loughborough University, working together to improve facilities. Most recently, the need was to redesign and deliver a new reception and entrance experience for the Sir David Wallace Building, elevating the space into a bold, contemporary gateway that reflects the university’s national reputation for sporting excellence. The project focused on transforming the entrance from a purely functional zone into an experiential space, one that inspires, informs and engages students, athletes and visitors before leading into the sports hall.

The Challenge
The design approach was driven by the concept of a modern Hall of Fame; a curated journey that recognises achievement while motivating those who pass through the space daily.
Lighting was a fundamental design tool, used not only for illumination but also for wayfinding and atmosphere. Featuring halo lighting to the main entrance, back-lit display boxes and a circular pendant feature. All carefully considerared colour temperature and brightness levels to ensure the space feels energising yet comfortable, even during peak usage periods.
Celebrating Alumni & Achievement
A series of illuminated display boxes were incorporated along the entrance route, housing curated alumni imagery that tells the story of sporting success associated with the university. These static elements are complemented by integrated digital screens, allowing dynamic content to be displayed, from live updates and event information to celebratory visuals. This flexible approach ensures the space remains relevant and adaptable for future campaigns or milestones.
The entrance itself was enhanced through the installation of a new entrance door and feature surround, strengthening visual presence and improving accessibility and durability.
Materials and finishes were selected for their ability to withstand heavy daily use, while maintaining a refined, high-quality appearance consistent with the university’s brand.
Every detail, from joinery alignment to lighting integration, was coordinated to ensure a clean and cohesive finish throughout.
The Result
The completed entrance now delivers a bright, confident and inspiring first impression. Visitors describe the experience as stepping into a gallery of excellence, a space that celebrates history while energising future performance. The redesigned route into the sports hall heightens anticipation, making each arrival feel purposeful and memorable, whether for elite athletes, students or first-time visitors.
