Full design, build and fit out
After being let down by the original architects, APSS was contacted to take over the design and fit out of a new specialist school for children who struggle in a normal school environment. Working to tight times scales, APSS designed a new facility for an empty shell. The designs incorporated a different type of environment to provide a stable and nurturing facility where students can feel relaxed whilst learning.
The team took into consideration the acoustics within the space, cost-effective finishes, the school’s ethos and teaching strategies as well as safeguarding the children.
A new mezzanine has helped to double the floor space of the building and the introduction of curtain walling to the exterior enhance the acoustic and thermal performance of the building whilst also providing more natural light.
With blue themes throughout, the interior promotes a calming environment. There are large feature walls across the building including a large forest graphic in the dining hall and tonal blue walls in classrooms which appears to blend in with the carpet finishes.
