New research has found that design actually has the biggest impact where worker contentment and happiness is concerned.
Thinking about office layout and design is an important part of running a business. You need to make sure you’ve set up your office space perfectly so as to ensure optimum levels of productivity, yes, but what about employee engagement and happiness?
New research from office space search engine Office Genie has found that design actually has the biggest impact where worker contentment and happiness is concerned. The survey of 2,000 workers in the UK found that workplace design can actually improve happiness levels by an impressive 33 per cent, so you’d perhaps be wise not to neglect this aspect of running a company.
Interestingly, design also came out ahead of flexible working, which may be surprising to some given that being able to work from home and other locations is often cited as one of the best work perks a company can offer. The study found in fact that good design boosted happiness levels by 21 per cent, compared to flexible working at 12 per cent.
It was also found that workplace design has a bigger impact on happiness than light, noise, temperature and social interaction, so putting it at the forefront of your mind when refurbishing your office might not be such a bad idea.
Head of strategy at Office Genie Peter Ames said: “Providing people with the environment they need in which to work at their best is arguably the most important step in ensuring staff are happy and also productive. In the modern workplace, where things such as flexible working are increasingly at the forefront of workers concerns, we’d urge an even stronger focus on factors such as design and layout: The cliché of a dull, dreary office is increasingly anachronistic, and this data shows why this should be the case.”
So now you know that you should be focusing primarily on good design to keep your members of staff smiling and happy… but what does this actually entail in practical terms? It makes sense to do a bit of research so you can see what’s trending in the office design world (check out our blog to see what the latest trends actually are), but you’d also perhaps be wise to speak to your employees themselves to find out how they’d choose to transform their workspace.
Open plan offices are a good idea since they can encourage collaboration and interaction between workers, making them more productive, but you might also want to consider creating a more homely aesthetic the next time you look into making changes on your retail mezzanine floors.
